Each year Barefeet Films hosts an intensive workshop, know as the CineGente Workshop. CineGente meaning, 'cinema people' in Spanish and Portuguese, and that is exactly what it is! A workshop for the people. The workshops are in screenwriting, acting and filmmaking, and have already taken place in a number of countries over the years. The workshops are aimed at people who are interested in acting, writing and filmmaking but are unable to enter the industry due to finances, lack of community support, language and/or literacy skills . The workshop fees are very minimal in comparison to other similar programs, although most programs are run completely free of charge. The workshops are run by volunteers, and CineGente/Barefeet Films has so far been 100% self-funded in its efforts over the years. For more info please contact us through our contact page.
CineGente welcomes and encourages creative people from indigenous and immigrant backgrounds, women, the unemployed, and people with physical disabilities to join. The workshop aims to educate people in the basics of filmmaking, giving participants the confidence to go out and tell their stories, and to educate others in their own communities with their newfound skills. The point of the workshop is to teach people to voice their thoughts through modern media and the internet. The workshops implement health and human rights aspects, through our local NGO partners.

CineGente holds a minimum of one workshop per year. The workshops are very low cost and often free. The workshops are in screenwriting, acting, cinematography, editing, production and marketing, and are geared towards individuals interested in the different aspects of filmmaking. The workshops are especially geared towards women, indigenous people, people with disabilities, new immigrants and people who are passionate about films but simply cannot afford the fees of a regular course of study or lack the encouragement within their community to try for a creative career as such. Courses are taught in various languages, depending on the host country. In the screenwriting workshops new immigrants are able to write in their own language and have someone translate their texts before meetings. Labguage skills are not the goal, so much as expression, and voice. The first CineGente workshop took place in San Jose, Costa Rica, and since then has also been to New York and Sydney. Our Sydney workshop was the first workshop to produce a film. 'Dream Kiss Cry' was based on the short screenplays written in the CineGente workshops. The diversity in the workshop was well reflected in the short screenplays each participant wrote. A few scenes written by participants were selected and included in our feature film, Dream Kiss Cry, for which these participants will receive a feature film credit. The screenplays written in this workshop ranged from drama, to comedy and science fiction. Some participants were taught additonal skills with various roles on-set and off-set. The CineGente workshops incorporate health education and human rights education within its program, and within the material we write and produce. As well as filmmaking skills, we teach languages, photography, dance, reading and writing skills, computer and internet skills.

CineGente holds a minimum of one workshop per year. The workshops are very low cost and often free. Due to the continual filming of our first feature film, 'Dream Kiss Cry', workshops in 2009-2010 were incorported into the actual making-of the film. A number of participants joined the production office and the crew on-set, where they were taught the necessary skills in the position they had chosen. The workshop skills were taught by both Melanie Carlile, and one of the highly skilled crew which each participant was paired up with. Some of the participants which came on board, already had skills in filmmaking and acting, but had never experienced working on a feature film set until 'Dream Kiss Cry'. All of these applicants will receive a feature film credit. You can also see some of their faces in the current CineGente promo video on the CineGente website.
Workshops will resume in 2011, in Fiji, New York, Mumbai and Brazil.
